DEM: Demurrage
DET: Detention
Free time: free use period
1)Definition and application for import DEM & DET:
1)DEM & DET charges are for all containers under Bills of Lading with the destinations located within
the United States.
2)The application for DEM includes: the next day of container unloading from the vessel till the day of
container picking-up by the consignee; If the destination is an inland point, then it includes the next
day of landing from rail, till the day of container picking-up by the consignee;
3)The application for DET includes: from the next day of container picking-up by the consignee, till the
day of container returning to the site designated by the carrier.
2)Calculation of import DEM & DET:
1)The carrier will extend NO credit to DEM & DET charges
2)The carrier charges DEM & DET in US dollars;
3)The carrier shall calculate the DEM since the next day of container unloading from the vessel; If the
destination is an inland point, then since the next day of container landing from rail; till the day of
container picking-up by the consignee;
4)The carrier shall calculate the DET since the next day of container picking-up by the consignee, till
the day of container returning to the site designated by the carrier;
5)If the imported container cannot be picked up due to physical reasonsof the port, terminal or inland
railway station (including Act of God), the carrier agrees that the import demurrage shall be calculated
since the first available date announced by the terminal, subject to the actual information published by
the terminal or railway station;
6)The working day (business day)mentioned in the DEM & DET Tariff published by the carrier, excluding
Saturdays, Sundays and Government Holidays;
7)The calendar day mentioned in the DEM & DET Tariff published by the carrier, including Saturdays,
Sundays and Government Holidays.
3)Application for Additional Free Time (Extra Free Period):
1)Based on the free time of DEM & DET announced by the carrier for containers imported to the United
States, the consignee can apply for extra free period.
2)The consignee shall submit a written application to the carrier through the shipper before container
loading onto the vessel, which can take effect only after obtaining the written confirmation of the
carrier;
3)The carrier will not accept the application for extra free period for container demurrage imported
into the United States;
4)Dispute settlement:
1)If the consignee disputes the amount of DEM or DET calculated and charged by the carrier (or its
designated agent: including the terminal and shipping agent), it shall be submitted in writing to the
carrier’s PIC for D&D within 30 calendar days after the issuance of the invoice of DEM or DET, and
attach relevant documents, including but not limited to:
a)Relevant DEM or DET invoice, container number, shipment number (booking number
or Bill of Lading number),
b)Reasons for dispute, such as:
i.Incorrect free time (must include details and
supporting documentation of correct free time)
ii.Incorrect rate (must include details and supporting
documentation of correct rate)
iii.Incorrect date(s) (must include Traffic Interchange
Receipt (TIR)
iv.Other operational issue (must include specific issue
with supporting documentation)
2)Carrier’s person in charge for D&D: Mr.Parker Zhu, (usadd@bal.cn)
3)Carrier’s person in charge for D&D will response with clear comments or solutions within 5 working
days after receiving the dispute submission.

DET: Detention
Free time: free use period
1)Definition and application for Export DET:
1) DET charges are for all containers under Bills of Lading with the original cargo receipt within the
United States.
2) The application of DET includes: since the day when the shipper actually picks up the container, till
the day when the container is returned to the site designated by the carrier.
2)Calculation of export DET:
1)The carrier will extend NO credit to DET charges
2)The carrier charges DET in US dollars;
3)The carrier shall calculate the DET fee from the date when the consignor actually picks up the
container, till the date when the container is returned to the site designated by the carrier
4)If the container cannot be returned in time due to the physical reasons of the port, terminal or
inland railway station (including Act of God), the carrier agrees that the container detention fee shall
be reduced or exempted according to the earliest returnable date published by the terminal, subject to
the actual information published by the terminal or railway station;
5)The working day (business day)mentioned in the DET Tariff published by the carrier, excluding
Saturdays, Sundays and Government Holidays;
6)The calendar day mentioned in the DET Tariff published by the carrier, including Saturdays, Sundays
and Government Holidays.

penalty as $500 / TEU will be charged in addition to the tariff;
1.6. The tariff doesn’t include any storage and reefer charges at port, rail, all these
charges should be paid by customer directly;

2.1. FOR LIVE REEFERS: The following tariff is not applicable to any charges that may be incurred by
live reefers, including but not limited to power supply and plug in/out, etc;
